The Act of Passing is not merely a performance—it is a living system of exchange. Commissioned for The Arts Fission Company’s 10th Anniversary, the work reimagines dance as a medium of relational inheritance, where knowledge, gesture, and intention are passed from body to body, from audience to audience, moment to moment.
The work is built around four episodes, each representing a different mode of practice:
Travelling, Staying, Becoming, Missing
Audience members are invited to choose one episode that resonates with them. Once they receive it, they become the carrier of that episode—with the responsibility to pass it on to someone else. The next person might be a stranger or a fellow audience member, and the way the episode is shared is entirely up to the carrier.
This ongoing act of passing creates a chain of exchanges that unfolds throughout the space and the duration of the performance. The choreography is not fixed; it emerges from these real-time interactions, forming a collective dance shaped by trust, curiosity, and transformation.
At the heart of this work is a simple but powerful idea: that art lives not only in performance, but in the act of giving, receiving, and letting things change.
The Act of Passing is an invitation to connect, to carry, and to share—one body, one moment, at a time.
